Scholarships and Financial Aid

Financial Aid and Scholarships  a

Financing your study abroad experience is an important part of the preparation process. While study abroad financing requires careful planning and management, the personal, academic and professional rewards that you gain will last a lifetime.

Financial Aid

Students currently receiving financial aid who are enrolled in a study abroad program may use that financial aid toward paying their program costs. Budgets for individual programs are available on the individual program pages (accessible through the search function on this page). When you start a study abroad application, the application will give you an outline of the steps for exploring financial aid and loan options for your specific program. There's no obligation to complete an application if you open it--exploring the financial planning for a program is an important part of the decision-making process. Here are the two most common questions about financing study abroad:

Q: Can I afford to study abroad?
A: The answer to this question varies depending on each student’s situation. If you have savings or parental help, or if you are willing to borrow loans that will require a co-signer with good credit, then you should be able to afford to study abroad as long as you meet the criteria to get a private student loan (NDSU has a list of possible lenders that can be found at https://www.ndsu.edu/onestop/private-student-loans). You are encouraged to research the different programs. To keep costs down, consider exchange programs and/or programs outside of Western Europe and the Pacific.

Q: What kind of financial aid is available to help pay for study abroad?
A: Students studying abroad fall and/or spring semester typically utilize loans, both federal and private, for funding. Students interested in a study abroad experience during the summer are often limited to private loans because most have already utilized their full federal loan eligibility during the academic year. Keep reading this page for more on scholarships for study abroad as well.

More on financial aid and loans is available on the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships' Financial Aid

  • Scholarship FAQ

When should I apply for study abroad scholarships?
    • You should apply for our scholarships a semester in advance, and if you are participating in a summer program, you have two opportunities to apply
      • October 1 deadline: Winter break, spring break, spring and summer programs.
      • March 1 deadline: summer, fall, and academic year programs.
How do I find out if my existing academic scholarship will apply to study abroad?
    • Almost all academic scholarships work for study abroad as long as you take the required number of credits. Still it is important to verify that your scholarship will apply as a part of your financial planning. Please contact your study abroad advisor for information on this process.
How do I find out if my existing tuition waiver or discount will apply to study abroad?
    • The great news is that most tuition waivers and discounts can be applied to any programs including Affiliate, Exchange and Direct, ISEP, and NSE, as well as NDSU Global Faculty-led and NDSU Global Internships.
    • Waivers you can only use if you are going on a program where you are paying NDSU tuition (Partner Exchange, ISEP Exchange, NSE Exchange):
      • GRAD Tuition waiver
      • Dependent of NDSU employee wavier
What if I'm receiving a scholarship that requires I take 15 credits while abroad, such as the ND Academic and the ND Career and Technical Education Scholarship through NDSU?
    • It's important that you let your study abroad advisor know so that you are registered for the right number of credits while abroad. You still need to take enough credits while abroad to meet the requirement as well.

Up to twelve Mitchell Scholars between the ages of 18 and 30 are chosen annually for one year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Applicants are judged on three criteria: scholarship, leadership, and a sustained commitment to community and public service.
